Chicago, Illinois
Number of Units in Development: 930
Description: The planners of University Village have dedicated themselves to the creation of a complete urban environment - a neighborhood that acknowledges the character of its past and respects the needs of its residents now and in the future. The principal gateway to the neighborhood is given a grand sense of arrival by a park and fountain at the historic intersection of Roosevelt Road and Halsted Street. The new retail district along Halsted features the construction of new student apartment buildings in vintage style with retail facilities on the street level. Additionally, some existing structures on the east side of Halsted and along Maxwell Street are being completely rehabilitated to create more stores and shops. The result is a vibrant new retail environment to serve the needs of residents of University Village and the surrounding community. University Village\'s buildings have been designed to recall the best of a great architectural heritage. Historic lofts are joined by new townhomes and six-flat condominiums to present a variety of traditional Chicago style facades and varying rooflines. Tree-lined streets, landscaped pedestrian corridors and three strategically placed neighborhood parks contribute to the community\'s overall effect of expansive green open space. Planning Is the Key to a Successful Community University Village is being developed to provide its residents with open green space rarely found in older neighborhoods. Small parks were created that link to UIC athletic fields, utilizing greenway corridors and parkways. Complementing this public space, large landscaped courtyards surrounded by homes of varying sizes and facades break up the typical city pattern of rows of identical housing. An effort was also made to allow for views of the skyline from homes and outdoor vantage points all around the community.
